The first visit to the dentist is often associated with a sense of anxiety and excitement, and the kids – even fear. In order not to be afraid of dentists, let’s find out what will happen during the diagnostic visit.
To make the most accurate characterization of your dental condition, specialists use subjective and objective methods of examination:
- A subjective questioning of the patient is to find out what and when the person was sick, whether he has chronic ailments and what kind of complaints about teeth he has.
- Objective examination after an introductory conversation – examination of the dentist in a specialized chair with the help of medical instruments.
On which often complain?
Talking about physical health is very important to make a complete picture of your condition and to conduct proper treatment. Chronic diseases, allergies to medications, hereditary factors and bad habits will help to identify “weak” places. Special attention is paid to the patient’s complaints on the dentist’s appointment. If there is pain, the doctor will try to find out:
- the time of its onset (at night, during the day, constantly);
- the nature of the pain syndrome (noet, pulls, pulsates) and its duration;
Be sure to tell the doctor about the previous treatment of such a problem and its success, if this is not the first complaint.
How is the examination at the dentist in the armchair? To assess the condition of the teeth, gums, mucous membrane and oral cavity as a whole, doctors use such methods as percussion, palpation, sounding, determination of mobility, etc.
First, the doctor will examine the general condition of the jaw with closed teeth. Lifting the relaxed lower and upper lip by the dental mirror, and also slightly pulling down the cheek, one can examine the mouth of the mouth, determine the presence of a red border, problems in the corners, the location of the upper and lower bridles. Attention is also paid to the condition of the lips, their peeling, the appearance of scales or hard crusts.
Prophylactic examination of the oral cavity is a check of the mucosa on the inner surface of the cheeks. Diagnosis of color, consistency and quantity of saliva, as well as the nature of the bite (the ratio of the dentition).
The next stage is the diagnosis of the condition of the gums and the tongue. Their color in the norm should be pale pink, and the surface – smooth, without ulcers and lesions. The dentist will determine the appearance of pathological changes in the gums, as well as the presence and depth of periodontal pockets. Particular attention is paid to complaints of increased sensitivity of the tongue and soreness.
Inspection of each tooth
The main thing that a qualified dentist will do is conduct a thorough examination of each tooth separately with a spatula, probe and mirror. In addition to assessing the shape and integrity of the teeth, attention is paid to the color and gloss of the enamel, the presence of carious manifestations or other defects.
In order to consult the dentist more fully and informatively, you may be assigned an additional examination – X-ray (ordinary, panoramic), laboratory examination, computer video diagnostics and so on.
Remember that regular preventive examination at the dentist and proper hygiene are the guarantee of oral health!
